Alban Eilir-The Spring Equinox

Welcome to Alban Eilir, The season, stretching from March 21st to April 30th, is a time when nature bursts into life, and we, too, are called to step forward with creativity and intention. Alban Eilir invites us to notice the signs of spring, reconnect with nature, and bring our internal winter dreams into the outer world.

In the druid tradition

Alban Eilir is one of the eight festivals in the wheel of the year in Druidry and is also celebrated throughout Ireland on the Spring equinox on 21 March, when the length of day and night are equal, and the earth comes into balance.

This is the time when the “un-manifest” dreams of winter finally burst into the “manifest” physical world. Just as the creative imagination of Imbolc begins to take shape externally now, nature is springing forth with new life, leaves, and babies.

This season also carries the energy of the child.

The Archetype: The Child

The primary energy of this season is the “Mabon and the Maiden,” the archetype of youth and childhood. Similar to Peter Pan (the Puer Aeternus), this energy is androgynous, pure, and endlessly creative. It represents a time before we are hurt by the realities of existence, a time of star consciousness, innocence, and unbounded optimism.

The child represents curiosity, innocence, creativity, and wonder. Alban Eilir encourages us to reconnect with that open part of ourselves that still knows how to begin, explore, and trust the unfolding path.

Alban Eilir and the Wheel of the Year

Within the Wheel of the Year, Alban Eilir follows Imbolc and leads toward Beltane. If Imbolc is the first stirring of life, Alban Eilir is the moment when that life becomes visible.

It is a season of coming into action. Not everything needs to bloom at once. This is a time to nurture what is emerging and trust the natural rhythm of growth.

A short reflection for the season

Alban Eilir reminds us that balance is not stillness. It is a living relationship between rest and action, darkness and light, dreaming and doing.

  • As spring unfolds, may you welcome what is awakening in you.

  • May this season bring clarity, hope, and the courage to begin.

Alban Eilir is also the season of the hare. The hare is a sacred animal, and there are many myths and stories to enjoy reading more in this related blog.  The Sidhe Hare’s Dance: Alban Eilir and the Awakening Earth in Ireland.
